What to Expect at the Oct. 28 Job Fair
The fair is listed on the City's October career events calendar from the Office of Human Resources. The address is home to the Vaux Community Building in Sharswood, where the Philadelphia Housing Authority's Workforce Center hosted City hiring fairs in February, March and May. No list of attending departments has been published, so go ready to talk about more than one kind of job.
Openings are posted on the City's official job board, with pay and benefits spelled out on each announcement.
⚠️ Read This Before You Apply
City hiring is not like walking into a store. Most positions are civil service jobs, and that changes the playbook:
- There is an exam. Candidates must pass a competitive test, which may be written, oral, a job simulation or a review of experience. Passing puts you on an eligible list that can stay active for up to two years.
- Residency counts. Most civil service jobs require one year of Philadelphia residency before you are appointed. Some announcements waive it, and they say so. Non-civil service hires don't test, but must move into the city within six months.
- Preference points exist. Veterans who pass an open-competitive exam get 10 extra points, and Philadelphia residents get priority over non-residents with the same score.
Living in Delco, Montco or South Jersey? Check each posting's residency line first.
Walk-In HR Office Hours Before the Fair
The Office of Human Resources is holding office hours at Neighborhood Action Centers, where staff walk you through open civil service postings, the exam process and residency questions, and help you finish an online application. No appointment is needed.

Moore (2320 Cecil B. Moore Avenue) at 2 p.m. on Oct. 22, then Kensington (104 W. Dauphin Street) at 11 a.m. and Richmond (2987 Almond Street) at 1 p.m. on Oct. 29.
Same day, different crowd: Campus Philly's fall career event at the Franklin Institute is also Oct. 28, aimed at students and recent grads. The City's calendar also lists a College and Job Fair at Lincoln Financial Field on Friday, Oct. 30, from 2 to 6 p.m. during One Philly HBCU Week, but registration details and eligibility had not been posted, so confirm on phila.gov or by calling 311 before you go.
